Default Weekly Summary

Every Friday, we summarize the discussions and events taking place in the Startupping community. We’ve been on-line only 4 days, but we’ve had a tremendous response and several interesting discussions have already started. According to Feedburner, we already have over 1,600 subscribers to the blog feed.

Interesting Discussions

The most popular forum this week was the Money forum. User jmiller asked about advertising and how a new site, with little visitor data, can expect to get ads. User justjer started a thread asking about how you value an idea and how you value the work involved in programming that idea. And Petr von SiteBar asked how many users you need to have to attract an investor. Meanwhile, over in the People forum, there is a good discussion on finding advisors.

Also, there are some great comments to the Best And Worst Decisions (Part 1) blog post, including posts from several entrepreneurs.

Wiki Updates

A new section of the wiki, Office Setup, was created, with information on finding office space and on selecting phone systems. Another new section, Process, is dedicated to the “how” of getting things done. The marketing section was improved greatly, with new sections on Organic and Non-Organic search and other ways of promoting a web site. The People section was also improved.

Site Updates

Thursday evening, we added a new Events forum, which is tied to the main forum calendar. The calendar is for tracking events relevant to startups and entrepreneurs. If you know of such an event, please add it to the calendar, either by starting a new thread in the Events forum or by posting an event in the calendar. Events posted so far include: Startup School, Web 2.0 Expo, Y! Combinator application deadline, and O’Reilly’s E-Tech conference.
In addition, we also turned on the reputation feature of the forums. Now individual posts can be rated and those rating contribute to a user’s reputation.

Startupping is a community for entrepreneurs. Help us improve it. Post your ideas to the Startupping Suggestions forum.

    Hi Mark,
I am a regular reader of this blogpost and am an aspiring entrepreneur. I have been thinking of starting up and have been wondering about the following:
“Is there a priority order for the activities that you need to do when starting up?”
Let me explain this a bit more. When starting up, there are a myriad things that you need to really think about - incorporating the start up, figuring out the finances, deciding the skills required and then making these skills part of the team, figuring out the target market to start with, thinking about the most appropriate technology platform to go with…the works. My own sense is that rather than trying to work on all things simultaneously, there would be a better way to think about the whole thing. It would really help me and possibly a lot of other readers to understand a good way of thinking about the order in which one needs to accomplish the various activities.
    Many Thanks for your time
    Nitin
